In compliance with Japan’s local laws, third-party entities are restricted from conducting official criminal record checks for employment purposes.The official database of criminal convictions for Japan is held by the National Police Agency and the data is not publicly available.
To provide the best substitute, ISS has joined forces with a local Japanese Agent who provides us with a multi- list search specific to Japan through a proprietary database of public and private information relating to individuals and companies involved in criminal activities, Japanese Organized Crime (OC), Right Wing Groups, Sokaiya and Religious Sects. The database currently holds over 150,000 records and is updated daily from various information sources including the following:
1. Japanese Black Media- 28 weekly and monthly business investigative magazines from 1994 onwards. Updated weekly with articles relating to Anti-Social Forces (ASF) and other criminal activities.
2. Police related association focusing on prevention of relationships between corporations and ASF
3. Monthly bulletin on reported approaches by organized crime individuals and front companies to businesses in Osaka and Tokyo. This is a subscription based bulletin and only available to association members.
4. Tokyo District Court: All criminal cases heard in the Tokyo District Court including cases relating to organized crime and serious crime cases going back to 2004. This source is updated daily.
5. Leaked Information: Leaked online information relating to lists of OC members and OC front companies. 12,000 pieces of data were leaked in 2007.
6. Yakuza Sites: Sweep of OC support sites containing names of 2,000 members.
7. Daily ASF news sweep: Daily press sweep of stories focusing on criminal cases and OC connected activities.
8. National Police Agency: Public list of senior members of the top 20 OC groups.
9. Police Most Wanted: Public list of “Most Wanted” provided by 47 prefectural police departments throughout Japan
10. Religious Sects: Details of 2,500 largest religious sects including their executives.
11. Right Wing Groups: Details of over 1,700 active right wing groups and their executives.
