SOUTH DAKOTA CRIME REPORT

Chamberlain: In 2013, residents of Chamberlain had a 1 in 134 chance of being raped, murdered or assaulted and a 1 in 25 chance of being the victim of theft or arson. Chamberlain probably wouldn’t even be on this list if not for a very recent explosion in its crime rate – between 2011-3, instances of violent crime more than quadrupled, and instances of property crime went from just 13 in 2011 to 95 in 2013.

Rapid City: Unlike Chamberlain, Rapid City’s crime problem has been slowly improving in recent years, with violent crime going down by 10% from 2011-3, and property crime dropping by 13%. Still, Rapid City had the worst rate of property crime over the 3 year period, with residents facing about a 1 in 24 chance of being the victim of theft or arson.

Sioux Fall: The crime situation in Sioux Falls has been has gotten increasingly worse in recent years, with violent crime going up by a massive 45% between 2011-3, and property crime by 5%. That meant that in 2013, about four Sioux Falls residents out of every 1,000 were the victim of a violent crime.
