MONTANA CRIME REPORT

Every three hours, a burglary is committed somewhere in Montana. A homicide occurs every 13 days, and a vehicle is stolen every five hours. And yet, according to the 2013-14 report "Crime in Montana," released by the Montana Board of Crime Control, most crime statistics are down slightly in 2014 from the previous year – and down over the past decade.

The violent crime per 100,000 population went down from about 249 in 2013 to about 241 last year, down about 3 percent. Violent crime in Montana reached its peak in 2003 at about 360 crimes per 100,000 people. The 10-year trend shows violent crime dropping by 25 percent from 2005 to 2014. Firearms were used in 56 percent of the homicides in 2013-14. White males accounted for 61 percent of the homicide victims in 2013-14, and white females 23 percent.

The number of homicide victims was up from 18 in 2013 to 26 in 2014, but was still below the victim rate in 1984, 1994 and 2004. The number of rape offenses in 2014 increased 10 percent compared to 2013. Since 1984, the rape rate has tended to trend upward – possibly, the report indicates, due to an increased willingness of victims to report the offenses to law enforcement.

ABOUT MONTANA

Montana is a state in the Western region of the United States. Montana has a 545-mile (877 km) border with three Canadian provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, the only state to do so.

It also borders North Dakota and South Dakota to the east, Wyoming to the south, and Idaho to the west and southwest. Montana is ranked 4th in size, but 44th in population and 48th in population density of the 50 United States.

The economy is primarily based on agriculture, including ranching and cereal grain farming. Other significant economic activities include oil, gas, coal and hard rock mining, lumber, and the fastest-growing sector, tourism.

The health care, service, and government sectors also are significant to the state's economy. Millions of tourists annually visit Glacier National Park, the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and Yellowstone National Park.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates that Montana's total state product in 2014 was $44.3 billion. Per capita personal income in 2014 was $40,601, 35th in the nation. As of June 2015, the state's unemployment rate is 3.9 per cent.
