Crime rates in Iowa were lower than the national average in every category. Between 2009 and 2010 the rates of specific crimes went up and down marginally, depending on the category. The most notable statistic was a drop in robberies by 16.9 percent. This put Iowa well below the national average in terms of robberies, with 33.2 per 100,000 people in comparison to 119.1 per 100,000 people nationally. Iowa came closest to matching the national crime rate in forcible rapes with 27.4 per 100,000, in comparison to 27.5 nationally.

With a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 in comparison to 4.8 nationally, Iowa proved to be an exceptionally safe state in 2010. The number of forcible rapes fell by 7.3 percent, and instances of larceny were down five percent. In the areas where crime rates went up, they only increased by a small percentage. There was one more murder in Iowa in 2010 than in 2009, but was it did not increase the murder rate due to a population increase of nearly 40,000 during the same time.

Aggravated assaults went up 0.1 percent, and burglaries were up 0.2 percent. The most dangerous city in Iowa was Council Bluffs, with a population of 61,181. It reported one murder, sixty rapes and 77 robberies. The largest city in the top five was Davenport, with a population of 102,628. Davenport had 865 instances of violent crime and two murders. It had the highest instance of property damage with 4,894. The most murders occurred in Waterloo, the fourth most dangerous city in Iowa.

Iowa is a U.S. state in the Midwestern United States, bordered by the Mississippi River on the east and the Missouri River and the Big Sioux River on the west.
