ARKANSAS CRIME REPORT

The 2013 crime statistics for Arkansas revealed that crime in that year increased from 2012, and the FBI expects crime to increase again in 2014, according to FBI data. Arkansas was ranked as the sixth state with the most crime.

Among violent crimes that occurred in the state in 2013, there were nearly 200 murders, more than 1,200 rapes, nearly 2,500 robberies and more than 10,000 assaults. Regarding property crimes that same year, nearly 32,000 burglaries were reported, more than 70,000 theft crimes reported and nearly 6,000 motor vehicles stolen.

Among all small cities of 200,000 people or fewer, Little Rock ranked second in the nation for murders because of increased gang activity, according to national data.

Overall, the FBI reported that crime in Northwest Arkansas was less than the national average. Most arrests in Northwest Arkansas involve theft, drugs and alcohol, said Sgt. Craig Stout, public information officer for the Fayetteville Police Department.

Although some cities in the state made national headlines in 2013 for crime, Forbes Magazine ranked Northwest Arkansas 28th on its “Best Places for Business and Careers” list during that same year.

ABOUT ARKANSAS

Arkansas is located in the southeastern region of the United States. The Territory of Arkansas was admitted to the Union as the 25th state on June 15, 1836.

It is the 29th largest in square miles and the 33rd most populated of the 50 United States. The capital and most populous city is Little Rock, located in the central portion of the state, a hub for transportation, business, culture, and government.

The northwestern corner of the state, including the Fayetteville–Springdale–Rogers Metropolitan Area and Fort Smith metropolitan area, is also an important population, education, and economic center.

Arkansas borders Louisiana to the south, Texas to the southwest, Oklahoma to the west, Missouri to the north, as well as Tennessee and Mississippi on the east.

Arkansas began to diversify its economy following World War II and now relies on its service industry as well as aircraft, poultry, steel and tourism in addition to cotton and rice.

The state's gross domestic product (GDP) was $105 billion in 2010. Six Fortune 500 companies are based in Arkansas, including the world's #1 retailer, Walmart.

The per capita personal income in 2010 was $36,027, ranking forty-fifth in the nation.
