With a population of 212,115, Birmingham's homicide rate ranked 7th among cities with populations of more than 100,000. St. Louis took the top homicide spot, followed by Detroit, New Orleans, Jackson, Baltimore, Newark, Birmingham, Buffalo, Baton Rouge and Pittsburgh to round out the Top 10.

Birmingham ended 2014 with a drop in homicides, just short of tying with 2011 for the lowest number of killings since 1966. Detroit ranked the highest in the violent crime category, followed by Memphis, Oakland, St. Louis, Birmingham, Milwaukee, Little Rock, Baltimore, Cleveland and Stockton. In overall crime, where Birmingham fell in the middle of the Top 10 and Salt Lake City ranked the highest.

Followed by Spokane, Springfield, Little Rock, Birmingham, St. Louis, Memphis, Oakland, Knoxville, and Pueblo. Of 289 cities with a population of more 100,000, Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery ranked in the Top 100 for overall crime.

ABOUT ALABAMA

It is assumed that Spanish conquistadors put their feet on Mobile Bay during 1519, and during 1540, Hernando De Soto visited the territory and slowly it started developing due to the influence of outsiders. During 19th century, its economy grew due to industrialization. At Tuskegee Institute, founded in 1881 by Booker T Washington, Dr George Washington Carver wrote down his famous agri-research.

In the 50s and 60s, Alabama was the centerfield for civil- movements. From bus boycott in Montgomery (1955-56) to the world-fame Freedom March from Selma to Montgomery (1965) all that took place in Alabama.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc with massive floods along the Alabama coastline. 22 Counties declared as ‘Federal Disaster Areas’.
